Rag....
Aug. 13th, 2006 at 2:56 AM
I just woke up from a really long and sweet uninterrupted sleep and i'm currently in the "rag office" aka recreation room in Kent Ridge Hall.
Sudden feeling to write something about my Rag experience and Kent Ridge Hall:
It all dated back to the first time i saw the "Seizon" introduction to rag committee video during the KR Hall Orientation when i was a freshman 2 years back. The image of excellence, discipline, prestige, teamwork and not forgetting fun was very well captured within that video of less than 10 minutes. I was totally impressed and inspired and had the strong feeling to join as a ragger which i DID as a freshman rag dancer then.
I wasn't a born dancer and i certainly was a pain in the ass when it comes to being taught. It just makes me wonder why my legs seems to get entangled during the practices and i always get lost in the beats and the counts - "5,6,7,8". I knew that i was given the chance to do the rag dance most probably because there was seriously a lack of male dancers in Seizon year BUT i would have deeply regretted if i did not even went for the rag dance audition and i'm really HAPPY that i got it! The lack of inborn talent simply meant more practices and less sleep BUT the strong motivation given by the raggers, rag dancers and especially the Fine Arts Secretary (Wee Liam) at that time just made me wanna do my BEST!
I still remember the times where we practice the rag dance till 2 am or so and how Wee Liam would make Milo for all of the rag dancers and even went to the extend of pouring it and serving us. It was at that moment in time where i felt the feeling of family in Kent Ridge Hall.
On the actual day of performance in the SRC, the adrenaline, the passion, the support/cheers from fellow Kent Ridgeans, the feeling and pride of representing yourself, the raggers and the hall right in front of the presence of VIPs like the President are things that really perks you up and drives you to give your BEST for the Hall!
In the following year, i decided to commit myself as a full pledged ragger and i was very sure right from the start when they opened up application in the first semester. I was the only freshman applying and i'm apparently the only freshman to be accepted! I still remember the interview conducted for the rag position application was very tense and serious. It was held in the SPR and about 10 of the JCRCs members plus Mingui, the rag chairperson was there waiting to interview me. I applied for the post of Business executive at that time as i feel that i'm able to help in doing something that i'm good or i should say better at. However, due to lack of male engineers, i became a float engineer...... :P
Me.... an engineer???? that was the first reaction i had! i simply doubted myself... i was unsure and not confident with the tools and machinery. Oh yah.... did i mention that i simply hated Technical classes back in secondary school - i was a student that wasn't even able to hammer a nail straight into a piece of wood with precision.... SOoooo for goodness sake, why me to be an engineer?????? haha
Okay enough whinning... haha .... its the manpower issue that needed to be addressed. I decided to take up the challenge and try to be an engineer! :) I REALLY DID NOT REGRET this decision! It was during this rag "Illuminati" that i made really close friends and felt MORE for Rag Comm! Boon Sern, the Assistant chief engineer was really a talented engineering student. I was impressed with his precision in all his measurement and his confidence in using all the god damn tools. Jyh Haur, the chief engineer was quiet BUT he is definitely a true blue ragger - talented in cladding and always willing to lend you a hand when you are in need of it. Our rag committee for Illuminati was small compared to previous years but in terms of spirit and bonding, i felt we were REALLY GOOD!
Due to the small size of the committee, we were really working our ass off UP TO the last minute! It was during that year of rag that i experienced 3 days without sleep and skipping meals like nobody's business. The importance of finishing the float simply blinded all of us and kept us going without much food and sleep..... GOSH .... i'm so PROUD that we made it in the end with a float - "Illuminati"! It was JUST such a BIG achievement! I felt that all of us had the dream and aim of winning and we would not be willing to do nothing except to put up a GOOD and i would say STRONG fight!
so why the third time? but...... WHY NOT....1st time.... i was in the front line (PERFORMING RAG DANCER)2nd time.... i was the supporting pillar (BACKGROUND FLOAT BUILDER)3rd time.... why not something ADMINISTRATIVE......?
that was the point where i decided to either run for the Rag Chair OR the Fine Arts Secretary (JCRC)
i still remembered the reactions people had when i told them about it.... the skeptical looks, the shocked reaction, the "Are you nuts" comment... haha ....
but i just proceed and went ahead.... and before i knew it, i became the Fine Arts Secretary....and recruited a team of talents!
THIS YEAR ....we built a flying train
we built the KRONOS
we have a great team of talentswe have skillful engineers
we have creative designers
we have artistic choreographers
we have great dancers
we won........we won BIG......
we won 7 awards for rag and flag....
we won 4 rag awards.....best float.....best presentation.....most environmental friendly......most creative.......
we won 2 flag awards......most commendable progressbest total collectionwe bagged the chancellor shield......
we created history.......we realised the aim of winning.....but the most important is whether i did managed to allow my raggers to feel that rag feeling which i always can't described....and felt....the feeling of belongingness to something ......
*I sincerely thank my rag committee 06/07
GOsh..... in the end....WHAT IS RAG?
it is .... REALLY to me.... an indescribable feeling!
Sounds corny? ....
haha i bet it does... :P
